Airwallex review 2026: multi-currency accounts without a bank
The Explore plan is $0 a month and includes accounting feeds, but transfer fees and a 2.8 Trustpilot score warrant scrutiny before moving supplier payments across.
Airwallex scored 76 out of 100 in the Audit Friendly review - a solid result for a product that is genuinely useful for one profile: a company collecting in EUR, GBP, AUD or SGD and paying suppliers in the same currencies. The core offer is a multi-currency wallet with local account details in 20+ currencies, FX at 0.5 percent above interbank for 11 major currencies, and payouts to 200+ countries. Cards, expenses, bill pay, invoicing and card acceptance share one login, and Xero and QuickBooks Online feeds come on the $0 Explore plan. For a cross-border team, that combination can replace a stack of foreign bank accounts and remove the double conversion that quietly erodes margins.

The structural catch matters more than most fintech marketing lets on. Airwallex is a licensed money transmitter in the US and a registered entity in other jurisdictions - not a bank. Balances sit at partner financial institutions, not in an FDIC-insured account in the company's name. The US site footer lists money-transmitter licences by state, and the pricing page notes that Yield brokerage services are offered through Airwallex Capital US LLC, a registered broker-dealer. None of that makes the product unusable, but a controller setting up treasury should read those disclosures rather than assume bank-equivalent protection. The fee schedule, last updated 18 September 2026, also adds $1 to $7 per transfer in the US and CAD $1 to $10 in Canada on international transfers - fees that compound on high-volume payment runs.
Pricing has two visible layers and one opaque one. Explore is $0 a month with up to 10 Spend users. Grow is $12 per Spend user a month plus a platform fee that the site does not publish. Accelerate - which adds multi-conditional approvals, NetSuite sync, vendor approval workflows and single sign-on - is custom priced, and the Audit Friendly review notes that multi-entity management sits here too. A 25-person company needing approval chains on bills would land on Grow and should ask Airwallex directly what the platform fee comes to before signing anything. On the support side, Trustpilot showed a 2.8 score from 2,582 reviews on 11 October 2026: 56 percent five-star and 36 percent one-star, with negative reviews describing account freezes - worth weighing if operating cash runs through the account.
For teams thinking about agent workflows, Airwallex documents three first-party MCP servers as of 11 October 2026. AgentOS MCP connects to a production account and the docs describe it as capable of reading and writing balances, beneficiaries, cards, invoices, subscriptions and cash flow reports. The docs state that AgentOS components do not initiate payments autonomously, which is the right boundary for a finance context. A Developer MCP reaches sandbox only, and a Docs MCP searches documentation with no account access. That is a more considered AI integration than most banking-adjacent products have shipped, and it is worth tracking if your team is building anything around automated payables or cash reporting. Implementation is low-friction overall: the application processes within 1 to 3 business days for straightforward cases, Xero and QBO connect from the web app, and NetSuite requires a bundle install and access tokens managed by an administrator.

QUESTIONS THIS ANSWERS
What does Airwallex cost for a typical small or mid-size company?
The base Explore plan is $0 a month with no setup fee and no minimum balance, and it includes up to 10 Spend users (published, checked 11 October 2026). A 25-person company that wants approval chains on bills and expenses would move to Grow at $12 per Spend user a month plus a platform fee that Airwallex does not publish. Larger or multi-entity groups are quoted on Accelerate. The running costs are transactional. FX is 0.5 percent above interbank for major currencies and 1 percent for others. SWIFT transfers are $15 or $25 in the US and CAD $20 or $35 in Canada. From 12 October 2026, Explore...
How do you close an Airwallex account and get statements, payees and history out?
Closing is a support process. The help centre (read 11 October 2026) says to cancel any paid plan from the Plan and Billing page, then tell the chatbot in the web app that the company wants to close. Support verifies identity and authority and starts offboarding under the General Terms. The Canadian terms ask for 30 days of written notice with no transactions outstanding. Withdraw the balance before closure by paying it out to a bank account in the company's name. If a balance remains afterwards, the help centre describes a refund request to a company account or to an account of the legal...
Who is eligible for Airwallex and how long does opening take?
Airwallex opens accounts for registered, active businesses in a published list of countries that includes the US and Canada, and it does not offer personal accounts (help centre, read 11 October 2026). US sole proprietors can apply with an EIN or an SSN per the US documents article. A published list of unsupported industries includes gambling, adult content, weapons and regulated financial services. The application is online. The help centre says it is processed within 1 to 3 business days after the required information is submitted, and that complex applications take longer. Expect to supply...
