Bloomberg Tax Provision reviewed: ASC 740 software for mid-market US tax teams
The former Tax Prodigy Provision scores 71/100 - solid for Excel refugees with multi-state filings, limited for multinationals or teams that need API access.
Bloomberg Tax Provision is the product that launched as Tax Prodigy Provision in April 2017 and became part of Bloomberg Industry Group after a deal announced 3 August 2021. The Audit Friendly review of Bloomberg Tax Provision scores it 71/100. It is a web application built around the ASC 740 balance sheet approach: current and deferred tax, state-by-state calculations, uncertain tax benefits, interim rates, the payable and the footnote reports all draw from one data set, so the rate reconciliation ties as work proceeds rather than at the end. The target buyer is a US tax department of one to ten people still running the provision in Excel.

Two recent product changes are worth noting. Bloomberg released a built-in ASU 2023-09 rate reconciliation report on 6 August 2025, breaking the reconciliation into eight categories in both percentages and dollars and adding taxes-paid disclosure by federal, state and foreign jurisdiction, with a matching tab in the auditor report. Then on 16 June 2026, Bloomberg said Ernst & Young LLP will provide implementation and optimization support for Provision, Workpapers and Fixed Assets. Those additions matter for a team whose auditor has already asked for more granular state-by-state deferred tax detail. What the product does not do: IFRS reporting, Pillar Two calculations and a provision-to-return link inside one database remain outside scope.
Pricing is opaque. Bloomberg routes every inquiry through a contact form shared by Provision, Workpapers, Fixed Assets and Research, and no list price is published (checked 9 October 2026). The only public benchmark comes from Vendr's Bloomberg Industry Group page, which reports a median of $10,360 a year, with the middle 80 percent of Vendr's reported deals between $2,573 and $32,928 - but that page states no sample size and lists Bloomberg Law, Bloomberg Government and Bloomberg Terminal alongside the accounting software, so it cannot stand in for a Provision-specific quote. On implementation, Bloomberg's own claim is full go-live in under two months. Its case studies are faster: three to four weeks at a global agricultural company with over 100 legal entities, one month at a Fortune 500 services company with 120 entities, and under a month at a midsize packaging company. Two case-study customers kept Excel running in parallel for roughly a year before retiring it, which is worth building into any project plan.
Agent readiness is effectively zero today. The Audit Friendly review of Bloomberg Tax Provision notes no first-party MCP server, no documented public API and no developer portal as of 9 October 2026. Bloomberg Tax publishes no API reference, and none of its product or integration pages mentions one. Data moves in through spreadsheet import templates or a direct export from Bloomberg Tax Workpapers (announced 18 July 2024). For a team whose close automation ambitions stop at Excel imports and scheduled report downloads, that is workable. For a team that wants the provision system to sit inside an agent-driven close workflow, the current product is not there.

QUESTIONS THIS ANSWERS
What does Bloomberg Tax Provision cost for a mid-market tax department?
Bloomberg publishes no price. The pricing page is a request form that covers Provision, Workpapers, Fixed Assets and Research, and a sales representative follows up (checked 9 October 2026). The only public benchmark is Vendr's page for Bloomberg Industry Group as a whole: a median of $10,360 a year, with the middle 80 percent of Vendr's reported deals between $2,573 and $32,928 (reported, per Vendr, checked 11 October 2026). The page states no sample size and lists Bloomberg Law, Bloomberg Government and Bloomberg Terminal beside the company, so it cannot stand in for a Provision quote....
What are the contract terms, and how do you get your data out?
Subscription terms for the software are not public. The terms page on bloombergindustry.com governs the website only, and the trust center lists a Data Processing Agreement without showing its text (checked 9 October 2026). Case-study customers refer to an annual subscription. Getting data out is an Excel exercise. Customers describe downloading reports to Excel with working formulas, including an audit report package and footnote reports, and one prints 13 reports with a single click. No API or bulk export endpoint is documented. Before signing, ask for the term length, the renewal uplift...
How long does implementation take, and who does it?
Bloomberg says the product can be fully implemented in under two months with onboarding from its Professional Services team (vendor-claimed, checked 9 October 2026). Its case studies come in faster: three to four weeks at a global agricultural company with over 100 legal entities, one month at a Fortune 500 services company with 120 entities, and under a month at a midsize packaging company. The Fortune 500 case describes the method: a one-hour call each week with a Bloomberg implementation lead, with setup steps assigned to the tax team in between, for four weeks. One mid-market customer...
