Sovos vs Vertex: which indirect tax engine fits your stack?
Both are quote-only, both take months to implement, and neither has a working MCP server - so the real split is clearance e-invoicing versus ERP determination depth.
Sovos and Vertex have been at this since 1979 and 1978 respectively, and they cross-shop each other constantly. Per Audit Friendly's Sovos review, the score is 77/100; Vertex comes in at 78/100. Neither gap is meaningful enough to be a tiebreaker. What matters is what each engine is actually hired to do, because a buyer who fits Sovos badly and Vertex well will feel that difference inside six months of go-live.

| IN MARKET SINCE | 1979 | 1978 |
| HIRED FOR | Sovos holds Plateforme Agreee status in France and says Global 2000 clients were live on 1 September 2026. | One O Series engine answers tax calls from the ERP, procurement, billing and e-commerce systems so every channel applies the same rules. |
| PRICING MODEL | Quote only: annual license by transactions, countries, IDs | Quote only: annual subscription, priced in revenue tiers |
| IMPLEMENTATION | Sovos publishes no standard timeline, and its data sheets put data mapping and integration on the customer unless a statement of work says otherwise. | Vertex's packaged Start Services run 60 days (Bronze), 90 days (Silver, Gold) or 180 days (Platinum), per its March 2026 data sheet, and they exclude... |
| AGENT READINESS | Exists: Not yet. On 24 March 2026 Sovos said it is developing the Sovos MCP Gateway to give AI agents standardized, governed access to its Tax... | Exists: No first-party MCP server exists for Vertex as of 4 October 2026. |
| WHERE IT LOSES | US-only SaaS or e-commerce sellers who want published plans and a self-serve setup measured in days. | Small sellers on QuickBooks Online or Xero: Vertex's partner directory lists neither, and it serves smaller firms through Kintsugi powered by Vertex. |
Sovos is built around compliance clearance. Its Compliance Network covers 60-plus countries, VAT Filing covers 64-plus jurisdictions, and it holds Plateforme Agreee status in France. On 23 September 2026 Sovos reported 170,000 registrants on its French platform and a 1.6 percent rejection rate against a vendor-estimated 20 percent market average - both figures are Sovos's own. Global Tax Determination calculated tax on more than 300 million transactions, and the Information Reporting suite handles 1099s. Vertex, by contrast, is built around the O Series engine: rates and rules for 20,000-plus jurisdictions in 195-plus countries, wired into an ERP through certified connectors. SAP is home turf - Vertex counts 25-plus years and 1,000 joint customers there - and its Accelerator+ gained SAP certification for RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud in May 2025. Returns, Certificate Center and e-invoicing (built on ecosio, acquired August 2024) are separate modules on top.
Pricing and implementation are similarly opaque on both sides. Sovos publishes no list prices; its legal data sheets meter transactions, country activations, tax IDs, source systems and archiving past 12 months as separate line items. Watch the transaction definition: in the Compliance Network and e-invoicing APIs, every 150 KB of a request counts as an additional transaction, so large invoices with attachments cost more than they appear to. Vendr's public Sovos page (updated February 2026, checked 4 October 2026) shows a median contract of $26,395 across only 14 purchases by 8 buyers, with the largest at $69,000. Vertex's FY2025 10-K describes a tiered, revenue-based model. Vendr's public Vertex page showed a $40,297 median annual contract across 47 purchases on 4 October 2026, while Vertex's own average annual revenue per direct customer was $142,997 at 30 June 2026. On implementation, Vertex publishes Start Service packages running 60 days (Bronze) to 180 days (Platinum), but those packages exclude SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Workday projects, which are scoped separately; Vendr reports $50,000 to $200,000 or more for ERP integration work. Sovos publishes no standard timeline at all, and its data sheets put data mapping and integration on the customer unless a statement of work says otherwise; Vendr reports enterprise sales cycles of 3 to 6 months and services at 30 to 100 percent of first-year license fees.
Neither product has a working MCP server as of 4 October 2026. Sovos announced on 24 March 2026 that it is developing an MCP Gateway, but on 4 October 2026 there was no endpoint, tool list or documentation available and no entry in the public MCP registry. Vertex has announced nothing; no MCP server appears in its developer network docs, the MCP registry or GitHub. Both expose REST APIs that a developer can wrap, but neither is turnkey for AI agent workflows today. The decision rule is straightforward: if your primary problem is clearing e-invoices through government platforms in France, Poland, Italy, Latin America or the Gulf, Sovos is the more direct hire. If your primary problem is getting a single, auditable tax engine inside SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion or Workday with certified connectors and deep US sales-and-use-tax content, Vertex is the stronger starting point. A multinational that needs both clearance and ERP determination at scale should scope whether a single vendor or a paired architecture makes more sense before the first sales call, because switching costs on either platform are high.
HOW TO DECIDE
| Pin the Sovos transaction definition in writing: every 150 KB of a request counts as a transaction under the Compliance Network terms. | |
| Vertex's published Start Service packages exclude SAP, Oracle and Workday - budget and scope those integrations separately before signing. | |
| Neither vendor has a live MCP server; any AI agent workflow will require custom API wrapping on both sides. |

QUESTIONS THIS ANSWERS
What does Sovos cost for a mid-size or enterprise indirect tax team?
Sovos does not publish prices; its product pages say custom pricing based on your company and needs. The public legal data sheets show what gets metered: transactions, countries, tax IDs or legal entities, source systems and archiving beyond 12 months, each licensed separately. Vendr's public Sovos page (updated February 2026, checked 4 October 2026) shows a median contract of $26,395 a year and puts single-module buyers at $15,000 to $60,000. That median comes from only 14 purchases by 8 buyers, pooled across all Sovos products, and the largest of them was $69,000, so a multi-country VAT and...
What does Vertex cost for a mid-size or large company?
Vertex does not publish prices. Its FY2025 10-K describes a tiered, revenue-based pricing model, and Returns, Certificate Center, e-invoicing and premium content are priced on top of the engine. Vendr's public Vertex page showed a median of $40,297 a year across 47 purchases when checked on 4 October 2026. Vertex's own average annual revenue per direct customer was $142,997 at 30 June 2026, about three and a half times that median. Budget implementation separately. Vendr reports $50,000 to $200,000 or more for ERP integrations, and Vertex's published consulting terms bill a quoted flat fee...
