Stripe Billing vs Zuora: which recurring billing system fits your stack

Stripe starts at 0.7 percent of volume with a published price list; Zuora's median contract runs $170,000 a year and takes months to implement.

These two products show up on the same shortlists, but they are not really competing for the same customer. Stripe Billing, in market since 2018, is the recurring billing layer of an existing Stripe account - priced on a published schedule and aimed at companies that want subscriptions live in weeks without a second vendor. Zuora, in market since 2007, is a billing system of record for companies whose contracts have outgrown a mid-market tool. The Audit Friendly review of Stripe Billing gives it 80/100; the Audit Friendly review of Zuora gives it 77/100. The three-point gap understates the difference in what you are actually buying.

Stripe Billing covers subscriptions, subscription schedules, quotes, invoices, a hosted customer portal and automated recovery of failed payments. Stripe lists 15+ built-in pricing models including flat rate, per seat and tiered, and Smart Retries picks retry times algorithmically. The price is public: pay as you go is 0.7 percent of Billing volume; annual plans paid monthly cost $620, $1,500, $2,950 or $5,750 a month for up to $100,000, $250,000, $500,000 or $1,000,000 of monthly volume, with 0.67 percent on excess. That fee is separate from payment processing. The Audit Friendly review of Stripe Billing notes that Checkout, Smart Retries, recovery emails and dispute handling do not work for payments run through processors other than Stripe. Zuora approaches the same problem from the enterprise end: recurring, usage, milestone and one-time charges on one account, account hierarchies, multi-currency invoicing and a metering engine the vendor says handles up to 3 billion usage events a day. CPQ on Salesforce, payment orchestration across 40+ gateways and Zuora Collections sit around the core. Zuora Revenue, which covers ASC 606 and IFRS 15, is a separate product. Zuora publishes no prices; Vendr's marketplace page reports a median of $170,000 a year across 149 purchases, with a low of $26,883 and a high of $696,804 (page last updated February 2026, checked 11 October 2026).

Implementation is where the gap becomes most concrete. The Audit Friendly review of Stripe Billing estimates 2 to 8 weeks for a single-entity SaaS company with card-first billing - consistent with Stripe's own published examples, which range from two weeks for Airwallet to six weeks for NVIDIA. Zuora's own 28 July 2026 release states that billing and revenue systems often take more than six months and a dedicated team to go live. Zuora announced an implementation agent called Milo on the same date, claiming go-live in weeks with up to 80 percent fewer resources; the Audit Friendly review of Zuora flags that claim as based on early customer data and says it should be treated cautiously. On the agent-readiness side, Stripe documents a hosted MCP server at mcp.stripe.com, labeled Public preview as of 11 October 2026 - meaning it is not feature-complete and some breaking changes are expected. Zuora ships a first-party MCP server and states in its 16 April 2026 release that Zuora AI, which includes Zuora MCP, is available to all customers; read-write access requires a OneID administrator to enable it explicitly.

The decision rule is not complicated. If your company already processes payments on Stripe, bills through card-first self-serve checkout and wants a subscription layer with a predictable published price, Stripe Billing is the practical answer - provided you do not need ramp deals, minimum commits or an ASC 606 subledger in the same fee. If you have enterprise contracts with amendments, multi-entity hierarchies, consumption pricing at scale or a hard requirement to tie billing, collections and revenue recognition to a single vendor, Zuora is the product built for that work and Stripe Billing is not. The thing to watch before committing to either: Stripe's off-Stripe payment limitations if you run multiple processors, and Zuora's module pricing if you need CPQ, Revenue and Collections - each is a separate line on the contract.

Get a module-by-module Zuora quote - CPQ, Revenue, Collections and Payments are each priced separately from core Billing.

Stripe annual plans are non-refundable and cannot be downgraded mid-term; model your volume carefully before committing.

QUESTIONS THIS ANSWERS

What does Stripe Billing cost for a typical SaaS company?

Stripe publishes the price. Pay as you go is 0.7 percent of Billing volume. Annual plans paid monthly are $620, $1,500, $2,950 and $5,750 a month for up to $100,000, $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 of monthly Billing volume, with 0.67 percent on any excess (stripe.com/billing/pricing, checked 11 October 2026). A SaaS company billing $250,000 a month would pay $1,750 a month on pay as you go, or $1,500 a month on the annual plan, which is $18,000 a year. That is an Audit Friendly calculation from the published rates. Card processing at 2.9 percent plus 30 cents per charge is extra, as are...

What does Zuora cost for an enterprise subscription business?

Vendr says the number of subscriptions, invoices or revenue transactions processed each month is the main pricing driver. Budget services on top. Vendr suggests 20 to 40 percent of annual platform fees for a mid-complexity implementation and 10 to 20 percent for premium support (reported). Zuora Revenue, Collections, CPQ and Payments are separate products,...
